Les photographies de Jean Pelchat sont à la fois des constructions et des déconstructions qui traitent toutes d’un seul sujet, qui est indicible : l’énigme de la condition (et de la représentation) des êtres humains, avec des personnes, et des personnages masqués, dans des mises en scène déconcertantes. Ce sont, en fait, des photographies narratives ; c’est-à-dire qu’il s’y passe ou qu’elles racontent quelque chose, possiblement une histoire.
Jean Pelchat est artiste — photographie — et professeur au département d’Arts visuels du Cégep du Vieux Montréal. Il a participé à de nombreuses expositions, ici et à l’étranger ; mais, ces dernières années, presque exclusivement au Cégep. Il a été membre du Comité de rédaction de la revue Esse au tout début de la publication (la fin des années 1980). À la même époque, il a publié dans nombre de revues, plusieurs collectifs, et quatre livres, dont La survie de Vincent Van Gogh, Xyz éditeur (Québec), éditions de l'aube (France), 1999, et Exile Editions (Toronto), dans une traduction en anglais, The Afterlife of Vincent Van Gogh, 2001.

Jean Pelchat's photographs are both constructions and deconstructions, all addressing a single subject that is beyond words: the enigma of the human condition—and of its representation through people and masked figures in disconcerting staged scenes. In fact, they are narrative photographs: something happens in them; they tell something—perhaps a story.
Jean Pelchat is an artist-photography-and professor in the Visual Arts Department at Cégep du Vieux Montréal. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Canada and abroad; in recent years, however, primarily at the Cégep. He was a member of the editorial board of Esse magazine at the beginning of its publication (late 1980s). During that period, he also published in numerous journals, several collective publications, and four books, including La survie de Vincent Van Gogh (Xyz éditeur, Québec; éditions de l'Aube, France, 1999), and its English translation, The Afterlife of Vincent Van Gogh (Exile Editions, Toronto, 2001). He was the principal organizer of the four CVM Biennials. Forthcoming publication: Ciel Variable magazine, no. 132 (Spring 2026).
