View of an industrial area near the Buffalo Harbour on Lake Erie. Not far from there are grain silos identical to those in the Port of Montreal, a sign of the monumental infrastructure that marks the great watershed of the St. Lawrence and the Great Lakes. Here, the geometric composition comes from the positioning of the camera in relation to the railroad tracks and the electric cable. A simple displacement would have completely transformed this geometry.

Designed by the artist in the late 1990s, the Panoscope is a single channel panoramic projection apparatus and a picture taking method adapted to its geometry. Luc Courchesne’s photographic series Journal panoscopique, begun in 2000, presents anamorphic representations of the surrounding space as seen by the optical system he uses. The works call for a form of interactivity, with viewers encouraged to rotate the disc on itself to select one of the multiple views offered by this photographic representation of the entire horizon.
