- LZ

“Following my work on Le chant des oiseaux (2019), I remained deeply attached to the symbolic significance of The Conference of the Birds (1177), a tale by the Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar.
In this mythical Persian tale, thirty birds set out in search of their king, Simorgh. Their quest takes them through seven valleys representing the search, love, knowledge, detachment, unity, bewilderment, and annihilation. It is only upon reaching the king’s palace and seeing their own reflection in a mirror that they realize they themselves are the Simorgh they have been seeking. Indeed, the name of their king translates from Persian as ‘thirty birds.’ This magnificent tale ultimately reveals itself to be a metaphor for the divine essence that resides within each of us. — LZ
