« Suspension is a series of photographs taken while I attended a Klondike Institute of Art and Culture residency in Dawson City some 8 years ago.

I was absolutely unprepared to negotiate the minus 45 C degree December air. Hampered by too many layers of clothing and heavy boots, I clumsily and cautiously explored the out of doors. In the calm but biting air, every part of my exposed face experienced tingling sensations. This rather enchanting state was caused by tiny suspended ice crystals and they remained invisible until captured by my camera’s flash.

The flash transformed each crystal into a prism. Imagine my delight on seeing these multicoloured faery lights and orbs bejewelling the darkening landscape.

The suspended ice crystals in the air could be considered as bodies in their own right. They are enchanting and delightful. In that way, I see them as having agency and being playful. » - Ed Pien 2020
