"Herd' and 'Sound of Thunder' came out of contemplations of our desire to belong. When I created these works I was fascinated with the way animals travel in herds or packs and how sometimes it looks so synchronized, almost feeling like a choreographed dance. I was also interested in the poetic use of contour lines, so with wire I created sculptural shapes of Bison and human figures forming the dance of community. Other animals travel in groups for so many reasons and most of these are not so different from how humans travel or act in society. It is our nature to want to belong to a group, perhaps at the most basic level to feel safe and protected. It can feel risky to be outside of a group. Like individuals in other species, you don’t want to be the lone soul that gets eaten. Those who stay together survive longer. In the images, I made all the figures look very similar in a nod to the idea that our identities are so strongly formed by our interactions with others. Still, each figure is unique, caught up in a complex dance of belonging and autonomy." - Meryl McMaster
______
- Meryl McMaster
