"The painting is derived from a 2023 woodcut print I made, called View of the Foothills. The background in the print has been replaced in this painting by an image taken of a windbreak near my childhood home in Manitoba (a windbreak is a narrow barrier of trees and bushes planted between agricultural fields designed to protect crops from strong winds and reduce soil erosion). As in many of my paintings, this painting looks at the idea of the threshold - the space between two distinct places. It presents the threshold as the location of a binary relationship - interior vs exterior, foreground vs background, real vs imaginary, and drawing vs painting." – DH
