"L'imagerie de cette gravure a commencé avec une carte trouvée en ligne, réalisée à l'origine par le guide cri, Auchagah ou ocîcâhk*. Il travaillait dans le commerce des fourrures en 1723 avec un colon/explorateur français, Sire La Verandrye, et voulait lui montrer une route différente à prendre entre le lac Winnipeg et North Bay. La carte originale était faite de bois carbonisé gravé sur de l'écorce de bouleau. C'est le seul exemple de carte de ce type réalisée par un guide autochtone qui existe encore aujourd'hui.

J'ai adapté la carte pour l'impression, et comme la carte originale qui a été dessinée au feu, j'ai utilisé un laser pour brûler le dessin dans le papier. Les morceaux de papier kozo en chine collé sont les lacs, rivières, étangs, montagnes du dessin de la carte... les vertèbres et les os à moelle de la Terre. Ils sont dispersés dans l'air car tout ce qui était connu autrefois a changé au fil du temps, perturbé par l'empiètement de la colonisation et de l'économie.

La constellation est celle des Sept danseuses [les Pléiades]. Elle reste constante dans chaque tirage et est percée à travers le papier. Cette constellation marque le début de la nouvelle année, quand il est temps de remuer les cendres et de commencer un nouveau feu.

* Auchagah est une orthographe française tirée du journal de La Verendrye. Comme je voulais essayer de retrouver le nom original du guide, j'ai consulté le locuteur cri Neal McLeod et ses professeurs, Mary Collins Cardinal et Brian Scribe, qui sont parvenus à un consensus sur la probabilité de l'utilisation de "ocicâhk". - Hannah Claus

"The imagery of this print began with a map found online, originally made by the Cree guide, Auchagah or ocîcâhk*. He was working in the fur trade in 1723 with a French settler/explorer, Sire La Verandrye, and wanted to show him a different route to take between Lake Winnipeg and North Bay. The original map was made of charred wood etched onto birchbark. It is the only example of a map of this kind made by an Indigenous guide that still exists today.

I adapted the map for the print, and like the original map that was drawn with fire, used a laser to burn the drawing into the paper. The chine collé kozo paper pieces are from the negative spaces of the map drawing: lakes, rivers, ponds, mountains… the vertebrae and marrow bones of the land. These are scattered in the air as all that was once known to be has changed over time, disrupted by the encroachment of colonization and economy.

The constellation is the Seven Dancers [the Pleiades]. Its placement remains constant in each print and is pierced through the paper. This constellation signals the beginning of the new year, when it is time to stir the ashes and begin a new fire.

* Auchagah is a French spelling take from La Verendrye’s journal. As I wanted to try and find the guide’s original name, I consulted with Cree speaker Neal McLeod and his teachers, Mary Collins Cardinal and Brian Scribe who came to consensus upon “ocicâhk” as a probability.
