» - Stephane Alexis

"Glimpses of the natural hair movement began as early as 1920 with the famous black nationalist, Marcus Garvey. He encouraged black people to embrace their hair and look at their ancestry to reclaim their aesthetics. He’s famously quoted as saying, “Remove the kinks from your mind, not your hair.” A seed was planted in the minds of black people in the West that sprouted nearly fifty years later with the advent of the Afro. In the late 1970s, the black hair movement took a leap as black power icon Angela Davis took the stage. She was famous for her big afro which quickly became a symbol for Black pride. As her march continued, kinky hair was embraced and the term “black is beautiful” came to life. Davis, along with other political black activists including Huey P. Newton and Jesse Jackson, began wearing afros as a sign of liberation, encouraging black people to take pride in their natural beauty. The Afro quickly made its way into the film being featured in Blaxploitation films such as Coffy, Shaft, and Foxy Brown." - Stephane Alexis
