"The first insight of shaved heads was reported in Ancient Egypt, where razors, knives and tweezers were discovered in tombs of Egyptian women. The cutting of the hair was used practically by both men and women in order to stay clean and remain cool in the heat. However, as time passed the purposes of shaving hair began to change. Shaving of the head has been used as a form of humiliation and retribution for women throughout the world, particularly in Europe. As African slaves made their way into the “New World”, many of their heads were shaved. This was considered as an “unspeakable crime”due to its witchcraft association amongst certain tribal communities. This act enabled slave owners to move new slaves into a condition of brokenness, allowing said slaves to be better manipulated." - Stephane Alexis
