______________

"Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) was born in Rome to an Italian officer and a Frenchwoman of Polish nobility. He settled in Paris, frequented artistic circles and worked as a journalist, poet, art critic and lecturer. An artilleryman in the French army, he was wounded in the head in 1916 and died in 1918 after publishing Calligrammes. A calligram is a poem whose typography, the graphic layout on the page, forms a drawing. Guillaume Apollinaire invented the word, formed by telescoping calligraphy and ideogram. Written in 1916, ll Pleut was part of Calligrammes. The present iteration of the poem is a reinterpretation."
