- Stephane Alexis

"Hair colouring originated in Africa and was used to represent belief systems and societal placement. One example comes from Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania, where Maasai warriors use red ochre or root extracts in their hair like a uniform, ensuring they are distinguishable from other tribe members.
Ancient Egyptians also participated in hair colouring, dying their hair black until around the 12th century BCE. However, in the 1800s a colouring agent was created by William Henry Perkins, an English chemist, in his attempts to find a cure for malaria.
Due to the high levels of pigment in black hair, bleaching is generally required to achieve true hues." - Stephane Alexis
