“I Became a Shelter” is one of the few artworks that I’ve made that combines more than one medium. In this case, it brings together my page art with my sculptural practice. The page itself was taken from a gothic novel, but the original story has been partially erased with layers of white paint, and only a few words remain. They form a new story and make up the title of the artwork.
The sculptural element is a vintage wooden table from the early to mid-20th century that’s also undergone a transformation. The flat surface of the tabletop has been cut in half and turned into a pitched roof. The frame of the table has been modified to accommodate this new covering. For me, the table evokes a human presence, and “I Became a Shelter” suggests that we all have the potential to transform, or to become someone new.”

______
