En este video de 20 minutos, una yuxtaposición del presente y el pasado arroja luz sobre las luchas atemporales de las mujeres por la libertad. La obra presenta un friso antiguo que representa la batalla entre los griegos y las amazonas – guerreras que algunos historiadores interpretan como representaciones de los persas que se oponían a los griegos, y que en aquel entonces eran designadas como las Otras: las enemigas, las bárbaras, las débiles.
Se establece una asociación entre estas figuras antiguas y las mujeres iraníes contemporáneas, cuya lucha por la libertad se expresa, entre otras formas, a través del movimiento de sus cuerpos en espacios públicos bailando y realizando acciones atléticas. Sus armas son sus teléfonos móviles, que capturan y comparten estas acciones en redes sociales, creando nuevas representaciones y nuevos significados de valentía y fuerza cotidiana.
A veces, vislumbramos las siluetas de mujeres y pantallas que se abren aquí y allá entre las formas esculpidas de los cuerpos guerreros en bajorrelieve. La banda sonora es una composición que combina los sonidos originales de clips publicados en redes sociales con fragmentos de audio de analistas e historiadores especializados en las amazonas. Así, la obra de Zelli cuestiona la complejidad de las identidades imaginadas, entre el mito y la realidad.

Nascuda a Teheran (Iran), Leila Zelli treballa a Mont-real. Té un MFA (2020) per la Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Zelli s’interessa per la relació que mantenim amb les idees dels “altres” i de “l’altre lloc”, especialment dins d’aquest espai geopolític sovint anomenat —amb un terme qüestionable— “Pròxim Orient”. La seva obra s’ha exposat, entre d’altres, al Museu de Belles Arts de Mont-real i a la Biennal de Toronto (2024). Els seus vídeos formen part de les col·leccions permanents del Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, el Museu de Belles Arts de Mont-real, el Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec i la Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. Va rebre el Prix Lynne-Cohen el 2023 i la Beca Claudine and Stephen Bronfman en Art Contemporani el 2021. About Dam and Hofit (2022), una pel·lícula co-creada amb Gali Blay, va ser guardonada a l’Athens Animfest i s’ha projectat internacionalment.
En aquest vídeo de 20 minuts, una juxtaposició entre el present i el passat il·lumina les lluites atemporals de les dones per la llibertat. L’obra presenta un fris antic que representa la batalla entre els grecs i les amazones – guerreres que alguns historiadors interpreten com a representacions dels perses que s’oposaven als grecs, i que en aquell moment eren designades com les Altres: les enemigues, les bàrbares, les febles.
S’estableix una associació entre aquestes figures antigues i les dones iranianes contemporànies, la lluita per la llibertat de les quals s’expressa, entre altres formes, mitjançant el moviment dels seus cossos en espais públics ballant i realitzant accions atlètiques. Les seves armes són els telèfons mòbils, que capturen i comparteixen aquestes accions a les xarxes socials, creant noves representacions i nous significats de coratge i força quotidians.
De tant en tant, entre les formes esculpides dels cossos guerrers en baix relleu, s’intueixen siluetes de dones i pantalles que s’obren aquí i allà. La banda sonora és una composició que combina els sons originals de clips publicats a les xarxes socials amb fragments d’àudio d’analistes i historiadors especialitzats en les amazones. Així, l’obra de Zelli planteja qüestions sobre la complexitat de les identitats imaginades, entre el mite i la realitat.
In this 20-minute video, a juxtaposition of present and past sheds light on women's timeless struggles for freedom. The work features an antique frieze depicting the battle between the Greeks and the Amazons - female warriors that some historians interpret as representations of the Persians opposing the Greeks, and who at the time were designated as the Others: the enemies, the barbarians, the weak.
An association is made between these antique figures and contemporary Iranian women, whose fight for freedom is expressed, among other ways, through the movement of their bodies in public spaces-by dancing and engaging in athletic actions. Their weapons are their mobile phones, which capture and share these actions on social media, creating new representations and new meanings of daily courage and strength.
At times, we glimpse the silhouettes of women and screens opening here and there among the sculpted forms of the warrior bodies in bas-relief. The soundtrack is a composition that combines the original sounds of clips published on social media with audio fragments from analysts and historians who are Amazon specialists. Zelli's work thus questions the complexity of imagined identities, between myth and reality.
Born in Tehran (Iran), Leila Zelli works in Montréal. MFA (2020) from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Zelli is interested in the relationship that we have with the ideas of "others" and "elsewhere" and more specifically within this geopolitical space often referred to by the questionable term "Middle East." Her work has been shown, among others, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and at the Toronto Biennial (2024). Her videos are in the permanent collections of the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. She is the laureate of the 2023 Prix Lynne-Cohen and the 2021 winner of the Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. About Dam and Hofit (2022), a film co-created with Gali Blay, was honored at the Athens Animfest and screened internationally.
