HISTORY

Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain (PFOAC) is a private gallery dedicated to presenting the art of today. Established in 2001, the gallery is located in the Belgo Building – one block west of the Musée d’art contemporain, and in the heart of Montréal. PFOAC occupies an area of over 1,800 square feet including two “white-cube” spaces suitable for both two- and three-dimensional art as well as a “black-box” room devoted exclusively to video and new media art.

In addition to its year-round programming of solo and group exhibitions, PFOAC regularly exhibits the work of its artists at national and international art fairs including the Toronto International Art Fair (TIAF), ARCO and PhotoMiami. Through its ongoing website and publishing activities, the gallery maintains a continuous, public profile for the artists it represents. PFOAC also initiates special collaborative projects with other galleries both inside and outside of Canada including Galeria Habana (Cuba) for example; and it has welcomed internationally acclaimed artists such as Adonis Flores and John Oswald to take part in solo exhibitions or in thematic group shows alongside the artists of the gallery.

PFOAC represents multidisciplinary artists who work in a wide range of media. Despite the conceptual, formal and aesthetic differences that distinguish their respective productions, certain thematic threads connect their approaches to artmaking. In some instances, the artists of the gallery use their art to challenge traditional modes of representation such as the landscape, the portrait, and the still-life. In other cases, the artists are more concerned with exploring diverse social or cultural phenomena. While some of the artists draw attention to the signs and symbols that define the world around us, others evoke those ephemeral or immaterial aspects of life that otherwise defy definitions.

Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain is committed to showing artwork that demonstrates critical engagements with contemporary art in all of its forms and complexity.
